KPOP stars talk mental health
As the KPOP (Korean Pop) community reels from the loss of Sulli, a 25-year-old singer who is believed to have died by suicide at her home, other stars are advocating for more recognition and discussion of mental health conditions. News articles around Sulli's death highlighted the "failure of management agencies to protect their stars from the menace of toxic fandom." Sulli had been open about her experiences with mental health, and - like many KPOP stars - had experienced intense bullying and pressures from both fans and the entertainment industry. Dongwan, a member of the singing group Shinhwa, criticized the way mental health is treated in the entertainment industry, highlighting the importance of seeking help beyond medication. In response to this discussion, fans of KPOP reshared a springtime interview of singing group BTS, in which the artists implore other celebrities to use their platform to increase dialogue around mental health to reduce stigma. The message has felt particularly poignant in the wake of Sulli’s death.
