A highlight on fentanyl seizure and responses from the White House.
Throughout the past week, conversation around opioids adopted a politically conservative focus, with discourse highlighting Mexico and China's involvement in perpetuating the opioid epidemic. Breitbart news released an article detailing the seizure of 25 tons of Chinese-produced fentanyl by Mexican law-enforcement. This article displayed a clear conservative political leaning, outwardly associating the opioid epidemic in the United States with Chinese production and Mexican immigration. Conversation around fentanyl seziures continued with the Drug Enforcement Administration announcing that 1.1 million fentanyl pills had been seized in Arizona during 2019 so far. In response to these recent large seizures, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on three Chinese nationals accused of trafficking synthetic opioids. Additionally, the White House administration announced new partnerships between private advisory groups, government agencies, and private companies to combat drug trafficking organizations that exploit legal opioid supply and distribution networks.
