Mental health policy in the spotlight
The past week's conversation around mental health continued the discussion on gun violence and mass shootings from the previous two weeks. Stories highlighted policies related to mental health, often within the context of gun control. For example, one article referenced President Trump’s effort to associate gun violence with mental health, instead of focusing on changing legislation around gun control. The Trump administration recently proposed the “Safe Home” project ("Stopping Aberrant Fatal Events by Helping Overcome Mental Extremes”) which would explore how to use artificial intelligence to identify the “neurobehavioral signs” of “someone headed toward a violent explosive act." This proposal generated a substantial amount of debate about the use of AI to potentially link mental health with violence. In addition, with the presidential elections around the corner, two Democratic presidential candidates also unveiled their proposed policies for addressing urgent mental health issues. Bernie Sanders shared his plan for universal healthcare that would expand coverage for mental health and substance abuse treatment. As an alternative strategy, Pete Buttigieg announced a $300 billion multifaceted initiative toward opioid addiction treatment and improved mental health care.
