Perceptions on medical professionals and their role in the opioid epidemic
Medical professionals have recently been a target for their involvement in the opioid epidemic, particularly given the lawsuits against opioid manufacturers that are in play. For example, past week conversation focused on a doctor pleading guilty to accepting payments from pharmaceutical companies in exchange for prescribing fentanyl, and other discussion focused on news that only 15% of pharmacies are responsible for half of prescription opioids distributed in the US. Other discussion focused on new guidelines for prescribing opioids that are currently being evaluated, including reducing the amount of opioids prescribed after surgical operations.
