Politically motivated conversations dominated conversation around opioids
Conversation this past week, particularly among conservative commentators, highlighted progress made in the opioid epidemic. The news headline “Drug overdose deaths drop in the U.S. for the first time since 1990” was picked up by many supporters of the current president, including Kellyanne Conway, the Counselor to the President, who claimed that this success was due to the current administration. Conversation around this post in particular spawned many politically-polarized comments. While conservative voices tended to dominate popular tweets, conversation around opioids was also driven by discussion from liberal-leaning sources, with Democratic Senate candidate Amy McGrath denouncing the incumbent Mitch McConnell’s ties to big pharma.
