A highlight on stress and its impacts on the mental health of young adults
The top story of the week referenced an online event hosted by actor Jack Black and internet celebrity Pewdiepie to increase mental health awareness and support the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Many live-streamers and YouTubers, like Pewdiepie, are often expected to produce viral content for their audience on a daily basis, which can cause stress and burnout. But, it also provides them a platform to voice their mental health experiences. Other conversation this week referenced the rising rates of depression and anxiety in Generation Z and listed environmental stressors, such as social media, as important causes of mental health conditions. Comments demonstrated mixed reactions – some dismissing Gen Z as oversensitive, and some criticizing society and the educational system as a main cause of mental health conditions.
Pop culture talks about mental health
A Korean band, BTS, received the spotlight after an interview where they disclosed their own struggles with loneliness and low self-esteem, and shared plans to address these issues in their newest music. Additionally, conversation this past week referenced the fictional superhero, Thor, who struggles with grief and depression in top-grossing film, “Avengers: Endgame.” Commenters lauded Thor’s relatable experiences, but criticized the insensitive and humorous treatment of his weight gain and alcoholism.
