A focus on housing
Past week conversation regarding social isolation and loneliness among older adults was relatively flat, with a modest increase in conversation at the beginning of the week, and a larger increase toward the end of the week. Discussion of housing and financial struggles dominated the week, with a tweet sharing the fact that more baby boomers and older seniors are sharing homes to ease financial pressures and fight loneliness. This phenomenon has been coined the “Golden Girls” approach to housing. Housing conversation also highlighted the fact that LGBT older adults face discrimination and challenges acquiring housing. A recent AARP survey reported more than ⅓ of LGBT respondents said they were worried that they would have to hide their sexual identity in order to find new housing as an older adult.
