An emphasis on depression & anxiety, with one top story around bipolar
Depression and anxiety dominated mental health-related conversation in the past week, with the two conditions frequently mentioned together in conversation. Conversation regarding bipolar increased earlier in the week, with mentions of other conditions remaining stable. The peak in bipolar was due to a Top Trending Story about musician Halsey. Hollywood Life falsely claimed Halsey had “admitted to being committed” to rehab for substance use. Halsey has received treatment for bipolar disorder and substance use in the past, however she published a now-deleted tweet accusing the magazine of “an irresponsible twist of words.”
Important conversations around self-harm
Self harm saw an increase in conversation toward the beginning of the week. Several trending stories and tweets contributed to this, including a tweet that focused on the importance of acknowledging stigma around mental health conditions among men, and the fact that men often feel unable to disclose their experiences with mental health conditions. Rather than disclosing their experiences, men may turn to self harm, including suicide. In a related story, four members of the N.Y.P.D. have committed suicide in one month, totalling 6 suicides since the beginning of the year. N.Y.P.D.’s chief recently referred to a “mental health crisis” within the police force.
